Optical circular deflector with attosecond resolution for ultrashort electron beam
نویسندگان
چکیده
A novel method using high-power laser as a circular deflector is proposed for the measurement of femtosecond (fs) and sub-fs electron beam. In the scheme, the electron beam interacts with a laser pulse operating in a radially polarized doughnut mode (TEM01 ) in a helical undulator, generating angular kicks along the beam in two directions at the same time. The phase difference between the two angular kicks makes the beam form a ring after a propagation section with appropriate phase advance, which can reveal the current profile of the electron beam. Detailed theoretical analysis of the method and numerical results with reasonable parameters are both presented. It is shown that the temporal resolution can reach up to ∼100 attosecond, which is a significant improvement for the diagnostics of ultrashort electron beam.

Using the relativistic two-stream instability for the generation of soft-x-ray attosecond radiation pulses.
In this Letter we discuss a novel method for generating ultrashort radiation pulses using a broadband two-stream instability in an intense relativistic electron beam. This method relies on an electron beam having two distinct two-energy bands. The use of this new high brightness electron beam scenario, in combination with ultrashort soft x-ray pulses from high harmonic generation in gas, allows...

From 1964, when mode-locking was discovered, until 2001, when the fi rst sub-femtosecond (that is, attosecond) pulses were produced1,2, laser pulse durations decreased by about three orders of magnitude (Fig. 1). Advances came through constantly refi ning known concepts of dispersion control and Kerr nonlinearities, aided by improved laser materials. Although a laser scientist from 1965 would h...

The temporal resolution of ultrafast electron diffraction and microscopy experiments is currently limited by the available experimental techniques for the generation and characterization of electron bunches with single femtosecond or attosecond durations. Here, we present proof of principle experiments of an optical gating concept for free electrons via direct time-domain visualization of the s...
متن کاملGeneration of attosecond x-ray pulses beyond the atomic unit of time using laser induced microbunching in electron beams∗
Ever since the discovery of mode-locking, efforts have been devoted to reducing the duration of laser pulses since the ultrashort pulses are critical to explore the dynamics occurred on a ever-shorter timescale. In this paper we describe a scheme that’s capable of generating intense attosecond x-ray pulses with duration beyond the atomic unit of time (∼24 attoseconds). The scheme combines the e...
